SANTA CRUZ, CA -- UC Santa Cruz played in their final home match of the 2015 season as they took on Lakeland College for the second consecutive evening. The Banana Slugs honored their four seniors from this year's squad – Blake Chadwick, Jake Hurwitz, Jake Landel and Branden Torado – as the Banana Slugs swept the Muskies 3-0.
In the first set, the Banana Slugs would only commit two errors during the course of the set as the Banana Slugs cruised. The Banana Slugs won the first set 25-19 and led the match 1-0. In the second set, both teams hit over .300 as the two teams played a back and forth set. The Banana Slugs won the second set 25-22 and led the match 2-0. In the third set, the Banana Slugs had almost double the kills than the Muskies did (17-9) as the Banana Slugs won 25-17 and won the match 3-0.
For UC Santa Cruz, Jake Landel and Lake Merchen both had a match high twelve kills and for Lakeland, Matt Stolz had ten kills. Blake Chadwick had a match high thirty nine assists for UC Santa Cruz and Jordan Smith had thirty for Lakeland. Jake Hurwitz led the Banana Slugs with a match high fourteen digs and Cole Aiazzi had twelve digs for the Muskies.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .471 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .600 while Lakeland had a .375 hitting percentage with the first set having the best percentage at .429. The Banana Slugs had seventeen more kills (47-30) than did the Muskies.
The Banana Slugs will have their two next matches on Friday as they travel to Southern California as they take part in the Asics/Wyndham Hotel Spring Classic. The tournament will take place in Irvine and will be hosted by NAIA member Concordia University of Irvine. The Banana Slugs will take on Warner University (FL) at 10 am and Clarke University (IA) at 7 pm.
