RIVER FOREST, WI -- UC Santa Cruz finished their Midwest trip as they took on Dominican University (IL). The Banana Slugs would come from a set down to win the match 3-1 over the Stars, completing a 4-0 weekend.
The Banana Slugs were coming off a 3-1 win over Stevens Institute of Technology yesterday in Kenosha while the Stars were coming off a 3-0 win over Mount St. Joseph University yesterday in River Forest.
In the first set, the Banana Slugs would start the set with four straight points capped by a Jorge Reyes kill. The four point lead was the largest lead of the set for the Banana Slugs. The Stars would claw their way back into the set and would take the lead, at 8-7, on a service ace. The two teams would trade points back and forth for the next twelve serves. The Banana Slugs would take a two point lead, at 16-14, on a Stars' attack error. The Stars would take the lead for good, at 17-16, on a service ace. The Stars would gain their largest lead of the set at five, at 22-17, on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Stars would go on to win the first set 25-20 and led the match 1-0.
In the second set, the two teams would trade the lead back and forth through the first half of the set. Neither team held a larger lead than two during the first half of the set. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the set at three, at 17-14, on a Jake Howard kill. The Stars would work their way back into the set and then would take a two point lead, at 22-20, on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good at 24-23 on a Lake Merchen kill. The Banana Slugs would win the second set 25-23 and would tie the match at 1-1.
In the third set, the Stars would jump out to a 3-1 lead capped by a Jeremy Royko kill. The two point advantage was the largest lead of the set for the Stars. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good, at 5-4, on a Howard kill. The largest lead of the set for the Banana Slugs was nine at set point on a Stars' ball handling error. The Banana Slugs won the third set 25-16 and took the match lead at 2-1.
For UC Santa Cruz, Howard had a match high fourteen kills and for Dominican, Luke Spicer had thirteen kills. Evan Kittle had twenty eight assists for UC Santa Cruz and Alex Coyne had a match high thirty eight for Dominican. Landel led the Banana Slugs with a match high eight digs and Royko had six digs for the Stars.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .326 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .464 while Dominican had a .215 hitting percentage with the first set having the best percentage at .318. The Banana Slugs had six more service aces (14-8) than did the Stars. The match featured thirty three ties and fourteen lead changes.
The Banana Slugs will have their next match on March 10th as they host Lakeland College. First serve is set for 7 pm.
