KENOSHA, WI -- UC Santa Cruz started their three day trip to Wisconsin and Illinois as they took on Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Banana Slugs hit better than .440 as the Banana Slugs swept the Red Men 3-0.
Both teams were coming off wins in their last matches. The Banana Slugs were coming off a 3-0 win over Ramapo College on February 6th in Rochester while the Red Men were coming off a 3-0 win over Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.
In the first set, the Banana Slugs led from the first serve. The Banana Slugs led 2-0 after a Red Men attack error. The Red Men would close the lead to one on two occasions; the second occasion coming at 7-6 on a Banana Slugs' service error. From there, the Banana Slugs would go on a 4-0 run capped by a Jorge Reyes kill to make the score 11-6. The Banana Slugs would expand their lead to double digits at 20-10 on a Jake Landel kill. The largest lead in the set for the Banana Slugs was at set point, at 25-12, after a Landel kill. The Banana Slugs won the first set 25-12 and led the match 1-0.
The second set started with back and forth play. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good, at 3-2, on a Jake Howard kill. The largest lead for the Banana Slugs was seven, at 24-17, on an attack error by the Red Men. The Banana Slugs won the second set 25-18 and led the match 2-0.
The third set was just like the first two as the Banana Slugs led from the first serve. The Banana Slugs took a 2-0 lead after a Red Men attack error. The Red Men would cut the Banana Slugs lead to one on four occasions; the fourth occasion at 11-10 after a Banana Slugs attack error. The Banana Slugs would expand their lead to double digits at 23-13 on a Red Men attack error. The Banana Slugs won the third set 25-15 and won the match 3-0.
For UC Santa Cruz, Landel had a match high twelve kills and for Carthage, Zach Lillig and Ryan Paull had eight kills. Blake Chadwick had a match high thirty one assists for UC Santa Cruz and Tyler Saieg had twenty eight for Carthage. Lake Merchen led the Banana Slugs with a match high eleven digs and Jon Storm had seven digs for the Red Men.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .443 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .522 while Carthage had a .089 hitting percentage with the second set having the best percentage at .176. The Banana Slugs had four more service aces (5-1) than did the Red Men.
The Banana Slugs have two matches tomorrow at Carthage College. The Banana Slugs will take on Lakeland College at 11:30 am and #1 Stevens Institute of Technology at 1:30 pm.
