Banana Slugs Sweep Tomcats

ROCHESTER, NY -- UC Santa Cruz played their first match of the second day of the Golden Flyer Tournament. The Banana Slugs' competition was Thiel College of Greenville, Pennsylvania. The Banana Slugs had more than two times the number of kills as the Tomcats as the Banana Slugs rolled to a 3-0 win.

Both teams were coming off losses in their last matches at the Golden Flyer Tournament. The Banana Slugs were coming off a 3-0 loss to the host Nazarene College on Friday while the Tomcats were coming off a 3-0 loss to Elmira College also on Friday. 

In the first set, the Tomcats would gain their largest lead of the set at three, at 12-9, after a Kody Johnson kill. The Banana Slugs would work their way back into the set, tying the set at 15-15 after a Tomcats' attack error. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good, in the set, at 18-17, on a Jake Landel kill. The Banana Slugs would expand their lead to five, at 23-18, on a Landel kill. The Banana Slugs would win the first set 25-21 and lead the match 1-0. 

In the second set, the Banana Slugs led for the majority of the set. The Banana Slugs took the lead for good at 2-1 on a Brandon Torado kill. The Banana Slugs would expand their lead to seven, at 13-6, on a Tomcats' attack error. The Tomcats would cut the Banana Slugs' lead to four on three occasions; the third occasion coming on a Banana Slugs' attack error at 17-13. The Banana Slugs would expand their lead to ten, their largest lead of the set, on two occasions; the second occasion at set point on a Gino Gamboa kill. The Banana Slugs won the second set 25-15 and led the match 2-0.

In the third set, the Tomcats would score the first two points of the set on two Banana Slugs attack errors. The two point lead would be the largest of the set for the Tomcats. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good, at 7-6, after a Tomcats' service error. The Banana Slugs would expand their lead to eight, their largest of the set, at match point after a kill by Lake Merchen. The Banana Slugs won the third set 25-17 and won the match 3-0. 

For UC Santa Cruz, Merchen had a match high thirteen kills and for Thiel, Johnson had seven kills. Blake Chadwick had a match high thirty nine assists for UC Santa Cruz and Zach Rombach had nineteen for Thiel. Cameron Bardeau led the Banana Slugs with eight digs and Rombach had a match high nine digs for the Tomcats. 

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .277 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .325 while Thiel had a .038 hitting percentage with the first set having the best percentage at .182. The Banana Slugs had twenty six more kills (46-20) and twenty one more assists (41-20) than did the Tomcats. 

The Banana Slugs will have their next match in six hours as they will conclude their time at the Golden Flyer Tournament. The Banana Slugs will take on Ramapo College at 4 pm.
