ROCHESTER, NY -- In the second set, the Banana Slugs led through the majority of the set. The Banana Slugs claimed their largest lead of the set, at four, at 15-11 on a Jake Landel kill. The Golden Flyers would claw their way back into the set tying the set at 22-22 on a Tim Zyburt kill. The Banana Slugs would tie the set at 24-24 on a service error, but the Golden Flyers would score the last two points of the set on kills by Kemp and Grant Levermore. The Golden Flyers won the second set 26-24 and led the match 2-0.
In the third set, the Banana Slugs would build a two point advantage, at 5-3, on a Riley Rutan kill. The Golden Flyers would once again claw their way back into the set. The Golden Flyers gained their largest advantage of the set at three on three occasions; the third coming at 18-15 on a service ace. The Banana Slugs would fight back to tie the set on four different occasions; the fourth coming at 22-22 after a Golden Flyers' service error. The Golden Flyers, however, would score three of the final four points in the set as the Golden Flyers won the third set 25-22 and won the match 3-0.
For UC Santa Cruz, Landel had ten kills and for Nazareth, Zyburt had nine kills. Evan Kittle had thirty one assists for UC Santa Cruz and Kemp had a match high thirty two for Nazareth. Landel led the Banana Slugs with three digs and Zyburt had a match high eight digs for the Golden Flyers.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .250 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .333 while Nazareth had a .435 hitting percentage with the second set having the best percentage at .556. The Golden Flyers had seven more digs (19-12) than did the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs will two matches tomorrow as they conclude their time at the Golden Flyer Tournament. The Banana Slugs will take on Thiel College at 10 am and Ramapo College at 4 pm.
