Banana Slugs Sweep Mavericks in First Game of Golden Flyer Tournament

ROCHESTER, NY -- UC Santa Cruz started their time at the Golden Flyer Tournament this morning as they took on Medaille College of Rochester, New York in the first of two matches on the day. The Banana Slugs hit better than .250 as they swept the Mavericks 3-0. 

The Banana Slugs were coming off a 3-2 victory over Elmira College in Elmira on Thursday while the Mavericks were coming off a 3-0 loss to Stevenson University on Saturday in Buffalo. 

In the first set, the two teams played back and forth during the entire set. Even though committing double the amount of errors as their opponent, the Banana Slugs won the set 25-23 and led the match 1-0. In the second set, the Banana Slugs and the Mavericks played a close set but in the end, it was the Banana Slugs who came away with a 25-18 second set win and a 2-0 match lead. The third set belonged to the Banana Slugs as they committed only four errors during the course of the set as they won the third set 25-19 and won the match 3-0.

For UC Santa Cruz, Jake Howard had a match high eleven kills and for Elmira, Calvin Crosby had nine kills. Evan Kittle had a match high thirty two assists for UC Santa Cruz and David Riggsby had twelve for Medaille. Howard led the Banana Slugs with seven digs and Peter Lotocki had a match high nine digs for the Mavericks. 

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .253 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .444 while Medaille had a .133 hitting percentage with the second set having the best percentage at .185. The Banana Slugs had fourteen more assists (35-21) than did the Mavericks. 

The Banana Slugs will now have three hours to prepare for their next match as they take on the host Nazarene College at 5 pm.
