ABOUT THE BANANA SLUGS: This is the 33rd NCAA Tournament appearance for UCSC and their first since 2016. The Banana Slugs are ranked 31st in the country in the latest Oracle/ITA Division III Men's Rankings. UCSC went 4-9 in duals this season but was 4-4 against Division III opposition. Playing one of the toughest schedules in the country, the Banana Slugs lost to five Division I and II schools. Senior captain Chad Stone was undefeated against Division III players in dual matches this year.
AGAINST THE STAGS: The winner of the match-up advances to the round of 16 to face the winner of No. 15 Trinity (TX) and No. 29 UT-Tyler. on Saturday Claremont-Mudd-Scripps qualified for the NCAA Tournament by winning the SCIAC tournament. The two squads are quite familiar with each other as the Banana Slugs have faced the Stags in each of their last three appearances in the NCAA first round. UC Santa Cruz played at Claremont on March 30, losing 6-3 with the Stags taking 4 of the 6 singles matches. Chad Le Duff was able to beat CMS's Nikolai Parodi at the number one singles, but fell to Parodi one month later 6-4; 6-1 at the Ojai Tournament. Parodi is the top ranked singles player in the West Region and teammate Jack Katzman is ranked 7th.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps reached the NCAA final last year before losing to Emory.
