UC Santa Cruz edges Point Loma in thriller

SANTA CRUZ - UC Santa Cruz's men's tennis team won their third straight dual meet outlasting Point Loma Nazarene 5-4.

The Slugs took the doubles 2-1 after Chad Stone and Ryan Dugan came back to win #1 Doubles 8-6. Derek Levchenko and A.J. Flora won at the No. 3 8-5.

Cheered on by several students including the women's tennis team, UCSC fought six even-matched singles with the 22nd-ranked team in Division II. 

Stone dropped a thriller to Brendon Millington at No. 1, winning the first set 7-6 before dropping the last two 6-3 and 6-2. Chad Le Duff had an exciting match at No. 2 but fell to C.J. Erion 6-4, 6-4

However, Flora defeated Tim Soderman  at No. 5 6-1, 6-4. Sean Hollister won at No. 4 6-3, 6-4 over Yuki Okamoto and Levchenko won at No.3 singles 7-6, 6-4 to finish the match.

"We had several tight singles play with Sean and Derek and AJ pulling out singles wins to get the team victory," said head coach Mike Napoli. "Both teams fought hard. It was a good victory to have."

UC Santa Cruz next battles Division I West Point on Saturday for Senior Day.
