SANTA CRUZ (10-24) – The Banana Slugs played their final match at home as they took on NCAA Division II member San Francisco State University at Lower East Field. The Gators scored one goal in each half of play as the Gators defeated UC Santa Cruz 2-0.
In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost 2-1 to University of La Verne in La Verne on Wednesday while the Gators tied Sonoma State University 1-1 in Santa Rosa last Sunday.
In the first half, the Gators would score first. Richard Leon took passes from Francisco Saucedo and Ranier Plantinos and tapped the ball in from two yards, with 31:28 left in the first half, to give the Gators a 1-0 lead. The final chance for the Banana Slugs to score, in the half, came with 17:00 left in the first half on a Shawn DiRocco shot but the shot went just wide. The Gators led 1-0 at the halftime intermission.
In the second half, the Gators would find the back of the net again. Ashley Watson stole the ball and kicked in a putback from fifteen yards out to give the Gators a 2-0 lead with 34:03 left in the match. The final chance the Banana Slugs had to score before the end of regulation was a shot by Reed Miller with 8:21 left but the shot went just high.
Three players (Miller, Luis Sedano and Ari Throckmorton) had two shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for San Francisco State, Leon had a match high five shots. Emmanuel Jimenez got the win for the Gators while Connor Anderson got the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Gators outshot the Banana Slugs 22-9 and the Gators had one more corner kick (2-1) than did the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs will have their final two matches on the road. The next match for the Banana Slugs is Friday as they take on Trinity University in San Antonio. Kickoff is set for noon.
