Leopards Maul Banana Slugs

LA VERNE (10-19) – The Banana Slugs played their second of two matches in a week as they took on University of La Verne in La Verne. The Leopards used two first half goals to defeat the Banana Slugs 2-1.

In their last match, the Banana Slugs tied with NAIA member UC Merced 2-2 in Merced while the Leopards lost 1-0 to California Lutheran University.

In the first half, it would be the Leopards who got on the scoreboard first. Christopher Wong scored to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead with 40:41 left in the first half. With 9:32 remaining in the half, the Leopards would strike again. Manuel Rodriguez scored to give the Leopards a 2-0 lead. The Banana Slugs' final chance to score came with 3:57 left in the half on a Ryan Nyberg shot, but the shot was saved by Leopards' goalie Greg Veron.

In the second half, the Banana Slugs would get a goal back. Nyberg took a pass from Amr Makhamreh and kicked a shot that hit the back of the net trimming the Leopards' lead to 2-1 with 30:40 left in the match. The final chance the Banana Slugs had was with 17:53 left in the match on a Nyberg shot that was saved by Leopards' goalie Gerardo Vazquez. The Leopards won 2-1. The loss extended the Banana Slugs' winless streak to three.

Jacob Myers Norys and Nyberg both had three shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for University of La Verne, Briley Venti had a match high six shots. Veron got the win for the Leopards while Andrew Pimentel got the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Leopards outshot the Banana Slugs 20-9 and the Leopards had three more corner kicks (6-3) than did the Banana Slugs.

The Banana Slugs will have their next match on Monday as they come home for Senior Day as they take on NCAA Division II member San Francisco State at Lower East Field. Kickoff is set for noon.
