TURLOCK (10-2) – The Banana Slugs completed their seven match trip away from home as they took on NCAA Division II member CSU Stanislaus in Turlock. The Warriors used two second half goals as the Warriors defeated the Banana Slugs 3-0.
Both teams lost their last match. The Banana Slugs lost 2-0 to CSU East Bay in Hayward on Friday while the Warriors lost to Sonoma State University 4-0 in Turlock on Sunday.
In the first half, the Warriors got on the scoreboard first. With 35:23 left in the first half, Willie Gomez tapped in an indirect kick from Rafael Chavez to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. The Banana Slugs' final chance of tying the match before the end of the half came on a shot by Lukas Holocher but the shot was saved by Warriors' goalkeeper Tomas Zajfert. The Warriors led 1-0 at the halftime intermission.
In the second half, the Warriors would again score first. With 20:26 left in regulation, Sean Bender would take a pass from Matthew Waldron and hit the back of the net with the shot to give the Warriors a 2-0 advantage. Less than four minutes of clock time later, the Warriors would strike again on another Bender goal to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. The final shot for the Banana Slugs would come with 3:53 left off the foot of Rodrigo Diaz-Valdes, but his shot went just wide. The Warriors defeated the Banana Slugs to extend the Banana Slugs' winless streak to four.
Diaz-Valdes had two shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for CSU Stanislaus, Bender and Ahmed Mohammed both had a match high four shots. Zajfert got the win for the Warriors while Andrew Pimentel got the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Warriors outshot the Banana Slugs 17-9 while the Banana Slugs had eleven fewer fouls (19-8) than did the Warriors.
The Banana Slugs will have their next match on Thursday as they will return home to Lower East Field to take on NCAA Division II member Holy Names University. Kickoff is set for 4 pm.
