AUSTIN (9-20) – UC Santa Cruz completed their two match trip to Texas as they traveled to Austin to take on Austin College. Both teams scored two goals in the second half but neither teams could convert in overtime and the Banana Slugs and Roos tied at 2-2.
In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost 3-1 to University of Texas-Dallas in Dallas while the Roos lost 2-1 to Southwestern University in Georgetown.
In the first half, the two teams played back and forth soccer for the entire forty-five minutes of play. The Roos would have four more shots (8-4) than did the Banana Slugs but Banana Slugs' goalie Andrew Pimentel had four saves in the half to keep the match even. The Banana Slugs' last chance before the end of the half came from Carlos Mezquita but his shot was blocked by a Roos' defender. The two teams went into the halftime break tied at 0-0.
In the second half, the Roos would be the first on the scoreboard. With 35:21 left in the second half, Philip Le took a pass from Thomas Quick and shot a low shot into the left corner of the net to give the Roos a 1-0 lead. With 22:16 left in regulation, the Banana Slugs would respond. Dominique Royall took a pass from Luis Sedano and punched it into the net after a shot by Sedano to tie the match at 1-1. The Banana Slugs would take the lead with 8:29 left in regulation. Jacob Myers Norys took a long through pass from Mezquita and shot a ball that beat the last defender and goalie Michael Moran to give the Banana Slugs a 2-1 lead. The Roos would tie the match with seventeen seconds left in regulation. Le took a pass from Chase Gaskill and blasted a shot from the left side of the box to the upper left side of the net tying the match at 2-2.
In overtime, the Banana Slugs would get two shots from Amr Makhamreh and one from Nathaniel Payne, but no shot found the back of the net. The Roos' final chance was a shot by Juan Ramirez but his shot was saved. The Banana Slugs and Roos tied at 2-2.
Myers Norys had three shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for Austin, Thomas Quick had a match high four shots. Pimentel and Juan Rodriguez were the goalies of record for their clubs. The Roos outshot the Banana Slugs 17-15 and the Roos had two more corner kicks (6-4) than did the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs will now have ten days before their next match. The next match for the Banana Slugs will be September 30th as they take on NCAA Division II member CSU East Bay in Hayward. Kickoff is set for 2 pm.
