SANTA CRUZ (9-18) – UC Santa Cruz started their two match road trip to the state of Texas against University of Texas-Dallas. The Comets used two first half goals to defeat the Banana Slugs 3-1.
In their last match, the Banana Slugs won 4-0 over Linfield College in McMinnville while the Comets lost 2-0 to NCAA Division III #5 Trinity University in San Antonio.
In the first half, the two teams played back and forth soccer for the first thirty minutes of play. The Comets would get on the scoreboard first. With 15:12 left in the first half, Alfredo Kaegi took a pass that was sent down the left line from Kevin Whatley and shot into the back of the net to give the Comets a 1-0 lead. The Comets would score again seven minutes later on another Kaegi goal to give the Comets a 2-0 lead. The Banana Slugs would have one final chance before the end of the half but Jacob Myers Norys' shot went just high of the crossbar. The Comets led 2-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Comets would score just three and a half minutes after halftime on a shot by Erik Reyes to give the Comets a 3-0 lead. The Banana Slugs would score with 2:10 left in the match on a Myers Norys shot after a pass from Ryan Nyberg trimming the Comets lead to 3-1. The Comets won the match 3-1.
Myers Norys had a match high five shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for University of Texas-Dallas, Kaegi also had a match high five shots. Joseph Weber got the win for the Comets while Andrew Pimentel got the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Comets outshot the Banana Slugs 20-10 and the Comets had two more corner kicks (4-2) than did the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs will have their next match on Tuesday as they will travel to Austin to take on Austin College. Kickoff is set for 2 pm.
