SANTA CRUZ (9-5) – UC Santa Cruz played their first match at home of the season as they took on University of Puget Sound. The Loggers would use a first half goal to defeat the Banana Slugs 1-0.
Both teams won their last match. The Banana Slugs won 3-2 over Augsburg College in Thousand Oaks while the Loggers won 3-2 over NAIA member Menlo College in Atherton.
The two teams played back and forth soccer for the first fifteen minutes of the first half. With 28:25 left in the first half, Ezra Kraus would score off a pass from Cameron Lorek to give the Loggers a 1-0 lead. The Banana Slugs would have three chances to score before the end of the half, but none hit the back of the net. The Loggers would lead 1-0 at the halftime intermission.
In the second half, the two teams would again play back and forth soccer. The Banana Slugs had several chances to score but could not convert. Holocher had the final shot of the match for the Banana Slugs but the shot went just wide. The Loggers won 1-0.
Holocher had three shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for University of Puget Sound, Kraus had a match high five shots. Wren Norwood got the win for the Loggers while Christian Deguzman got the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Banana Slugs outshot the Loggers 11-8 and the Banana Slugs had three more corner kicks (4-1) than did the Loggers.
The Banana Slugs will have their next match on Friday as they will take on Willamette University. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm.
