THOUSAND OAKS (9-2) – UC Santa Cruz played their second match in as many days as they took on Augsburg College. The match was a neutral site match played at William Roland Stadium on the campus of California Lutheran University. The Banana Slugs scored the game-winning goal with less than five minutes left in the match to win 3-2.
Both teams lost their last match yesterday. The Banana Slugs fell to Pomona-Pitzer 2-1 in Pomona while the Auggies lost 2-0 to California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.
The Banana Slugs would score first. With 32:32 left in the first half, Rodrigo Diaz-Valdes would kick a rocket into the bottom right corner to give the Banana Slugs a 1-0 lead. The Auggies would have an opportunity to tie the match but Bobby Kohl's penalty kick was saved by Christian Deguzman with 21:03 left in the half. The two teams would play back and forth soccer for the remainder of the half. The Banana Slugs led 1-0 at the half.
In the second half, the scoring came early and often. With 33:26 left in the match, Luke Falk would score on a shot to the lower left portion of the net to tie the match at 1-1. Less than two minutes later, with 31:30 left in the match, the Banana Slugs would take the lead again on an Ari Throckmorton shot was taken while he was falling away from the net to give the Banana Slugs a 2-1 advantage. With 24:25 left in the match, the Auggies would tie the match, at 2-2, again on a Lionel Vang shot to the upper left corner of the net. The two teams would again play back and forth soccer for the next twenty minutes of clock time. With 3:39 left in the match, Reed Miller took a pass from Jacob Myers Norys across the middle and shot into the lower right side of the net to give the Banana Slugs a 3-2 advantage. The Auggies' final shot to tie the match came with twenty-nine seconds left but Kohl's shot was saved by Deguzman. The Banana Slugs won the match 3-2.
Myers Norys had a match high four shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for Augsburg, Kohl had three shots. Christian Deguzman got the win for the Banana Slugs while Tommy Molski got the loss for the Auggies. The Banana Slugs outshot the Auggies 13-8 and while the Auggies had three more corner kicks (3-0) than did the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs will have their next match at home on Monday as they will take on University of Puget Sound in their home opener. Kickoff is set for noon.
