TURLOCK (10-14) – UC Santa Cruz traveled to Turlock to take on NCAA Division II opponent Stanislaus State University. The match was a close affair, but, in the end, the Warriors defeated the Banana Slugs 3-0.
Both teams lost their last match. The Banana Slugs lost to University of Antelope Valley 5-1 in Lancaster on October 4th while the Warriors lost to Cal Poly Pomona 2-0 on Sunday in Turlock.
In the first half, the match was played mostly in the Warriors' offensive zone as the Warriors had thirteen shots. Christian Deguzman had three saves in the half to help the Banana Slugs' cause. The Warriors would get on the scoreboard with a Ryan Chaney goal with 16:08 left in the half to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Neither team would get the ball in the back of the net for the remainder of the half as the Warriors led at halftime 1-0.
In the second half, the Warriors kept the pressure up on the Banana Slugs. With 36:39 left in the match, Josue Barajas scored to give the Warriors a 2-0 advantage. With 27:24 left, Daniel Kuczynski scored the Warriors' final tally to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. The Warriors won the match 3-0.
Rodrigo Diaz-Valdes had two shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for Stanislaus State, Manny Villegas had a match high six shots. Russ Klabough got the win for the Warriors while Deguzman got the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Warriors outshot the Banana Slugs 20-5 and had six more corner kicks (8-2) than did the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs' next match is Friday as they take on North Park University in Chicago. Kickoff is set for 5 pm.
