Banana Slugs Fall to University of Antelope Valley

LANCASTER (10-4) – UC Santa Cruz had their losing streak extended to two as NAIA opponent University of Antelope Valley scored five goals in the first half to defeat the Banana Slugs 5-1.

In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost to University of La Verne 1-0 in La Verne yesterday while the Pioneers defeated UC Merced 1-0 yesterday in Lancaster.

In the first half, the Pioneers would start the scoring with 36:32 left as Emerson Roque received a long pass down the right side of the field and shot the ball into the back right of the net to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Henry Roque would add the next Pioneers' goal just five minutes later on a cross to the middle as the Pioneers led 2-0. Emerson Roque would add another goal with 25:09 left to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Pioneers. Emerson Roque would finish his hat trick with 21:55 left in the half to make the score 4-0 in the Pioneers favor. The Pioneers would score their final goal of the day with 8:37 left on a Jesus Maciel goal to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Pioneers. Jacob Myers Norys scored on a penalty kick with just ten seconds remaining in the half to cut the Pioneers' lead to 5-1 at the halftime intermission.

In the second half, neither team could find the back of the net. The Banana Slugs would have several chances; however, the ball went just wide. Towards the end of the match, it was the Pioneers placing most of the pressure on the net but Connor Anderson would record four saves on the half. The Pioneers won the match 5-1.  

Jacob Myers Norys had a match high six shots apiece to lead the Banana Slugs while for the University of Antelope Valley, Emerson Roque also had a match high six shots. The Pioneers outshot the Banana Slugs 13-12 and had three fewer fouls (12-9) than did the Banana Slugs.

The Banana Slugs' next match is Wednesday October 14th as they take on Stanislaus State University in Turlock. Kickoff is set for 4:30 pm.
