REDLANDS (12-8) – The Banana Slugs continued their road trip as they took on University of Redlands in Redlands. The Banana Slugs would tie the game late and would defeat the Bulldogs 69-66 in overtime.
In the first half, the Bulldogs would start the game on a 10-4 run capped by a David Menary three pointer with 16:08 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would respond with a 6-0 run of their own, capped by a Sam Gabbard three pointer with 13:26 left, to tie the game at 10-10 with 13:26 left in the half. The Bulldogs would go on a 24-14 run, capped by a Menary three pointer, over the next 8:59 of clock time to take a double-digit lead at 34-24. The Bulldogs would take their largest lead of the ballgame at thirteen, at 39-26, on a Parker Landolf three pointer with 1:31 left in the half. The Bulldogs led 39-30 at halftime.
In the second half, the Banana Slugs would methodically chip away at the Bulldogs' lead. The Banana Slugs would come within single digits, at 44-35, on a Rashard Thornhill free throw with 15:20 left in regulation. The Banana Slugs would come as close as one, at 44-43, on a Haakon Ullrich layup with 10:16 left in regulation. The Bulldogs would hold a two-possession lead for the remainder of the half. After Joey Sponheim hit a three pointer with fifty-four seconds left to give the Bulldogs a 59-54 lead, Rashard Thornhill would hit a three to trim the Bulldogs' lead to two with forty-two seconds left. On the ensuing Bulldogs' possession, the Bulldogs would turn the ball over. The Banana Slugs would tie the game with two seconds left on a jumper by Gabbard sending the game into overtime.
In the overtime frame, Menary would give the Bulldogs the lead with 4:20 left at 61-59. The Banana Slugs would gain the lead back at 65-64 on a Patrick Ramos layup with 1:21 left. The Bulldogs would score on the ensuing possession on a Sponheim layup with fifty-six seconds left. The Banana Slugs would gain the lead for good, at 68-66, with twenty-six seconds left on a Ramos three-pointer. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at three, at 69-66, on a Will Crain free throw with eight seconds left. The win marked the Banana Slugs' second in a row.
Gabbard had sixteen points to lead the Banana Slugs. Menary had a game-high thirty-three points for the Bulldogs. Ramos had twelve and Crain had eleven for the Banana Slugs in the win. Landolf had thirteen and Sponheim had nine for the Bulldogs.
The Banana Slugs shot 37.8% (28-74) from the field, 28.6% (6-21) from the three-point line and were 63.6% (7-11) from the free throw line. The Bulldogs shot 36.8% (25-68) from the field, 33.3% (9-27) from the three-point line and 53.8% (7-13) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced nine turnovers by the Bulldogs scoring eleven points off the turnovers while the Bulldogs' defense forced fifteen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring fourteen points off the turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded University of Redlands 53-40 and the Banana Slugs had fourteen more points in the paint (42-28) than did the Bulldogs.
