Banana Slugs knock off previously undefeated Johnson and Wales 73-69

DENVER- Clutch free-throw shooting and big performances from forwards Will Crain and Sam Gabbard gave UC Santa Cruz a 73-69 road win over Johnson and Wales.

UCSC improves to 4-3.

Crain, who was limited in foul trouble in Saturday's loss at Colorado College, led the Slugs with a season-high 24 points, along with 8 rebounds and four blocks. Gabbard added 15 points 11 rebounds and 3 assists to hand the Wildcats (5-1) their first defeat of the season.

Andrew Romero led Johnson and Wales with 25 points playing all 40 minutes. Jontrell Herman added 21 points, including 5-14 from three to go with team-highs of 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

UCSC only attempted six free-throws at Colorado College, but was 20-32 from the line Sunday. The Wildcats were just 8-16 from the line in comparison.

UCSC shot 7-10 from the line in the final 1:42 to hold off the hosts in a back-and-forth game that featured eight lead changes and nine ties. 

Simon Mueller-Landsvik, who finished with 10 points, broke the last tie with 2:10 to play on an "and-one" that gave UCSC a 64-61 lead.

The Slugs will play in southern California next weekend, beginning with a rematch at Redlands on Saturday the 8th.
