HONOLULU - Four players in double figures helped lead UC Santa Cruz to a 66-49 win over Principia in the Hoops in Hawai'i Classic.
UCSC improved to 7-4 to tie the school record for Division III wins in a season.
In the program's history, the Slugs had achieved 7 Division III wins just twice. In the midst of its best start ever, UCSC has reached that mark before Christmas.
With the game tied at 8-all, the Banana Slugs broke open a close game with a 27-5 run capped by Sam Gabbard's put-back at the buzzer to take a 35-13 lead at the half and never look back.
The Banana Slugs outrebounded the Panthers 46-31 and shot 41.2% (28-68) from the field, including 6-17 from three-point land. Sam Gabbard led UCSC with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Will Crain also had 12 points off the bench with 7 rebounds and a block.Micah Paulson led Principia with 17 points playing all 40 minutes.
UCSC plays Messiah tomorrow night to close the Classic.
