SHERMAN, TX -- UC Santa Cruz finished their 2014-2015 regular season as they took on Austin College in Sherman. The Roos would jump to a double digit lead early and would survive a second half comeback as the Roos defeated the Banana Slugs 68-58.
Both teams were coming off losses in their last game. UC Santa Cruz was coming off a 74-56 loss to Southwestern College in Georgetown yesterday and Austin was coming off a 83-66 loss to the University of Dallas yesterday in Dallas.
In the first half, the Roos jumped out to a 13-0 lead, capped by an Alvin Michael jumper with 14:53 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would come as close as ten, at 15-5, on a Jared Ponce jumper with 12:53 left in the half. The Roos would gain their largest lead of the half at twenty one, at 39-18, on an Eghosa Igbinosa jumper with 1:33 left. Tre Weston would score on a layup with 1:14 left in the half to make the score 39-20. The 39-20 score would be the score at halftime.
Jared Ponce and Townsend both had nineteen points for the Banana Slugs. Townsend had a double double with eleven rebounds. Kevin Graham had a game high twenty six points for the Roos. Tre Weston had twelve points in the loss. Michael had sixteen points for the Roos.
The Banana Slugs shot 29% (18-62) from the field, 24% (6-25) from the three point line and was 64% (16-25) from the free throw line. The Roos shot 54.3% (25-46) from the field, 39.1% (9-23) from the three point line and 52.9% (9-17) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced twenty six Roo turnovers scoring nineteen points off the turnovers while the Roos' defense forced twelve turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring twelve points off the turnovers. Austin outrebounded UC Santa Cruz 43-31 but the Banana Slugs had eight more bench points (17-9) than did the Roos.
With the loss, the Banana Slugs conclude their 2014-2015 with a record of 12-13. The twelve wins are the most since the 2011-2012 season.
