Townsend, Wells, Ponce named to Independent Conference Team

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The UC Santa Cruz Men's Basketball team, a member of the NCAA DIII Independent Conference, received three individual awards for the 2013-14 season. 
Junior James Townsend (Sacramento High School, Sacramento, CA) earned NCAA All-Independent 2nd Team for the second consecutive season. The starting center and team co-captain, averaged 10.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game for the Banana Slugs. 
Senior Spencer Wells (Los Altos High School, Los Altos, CA) earned NCAA All- Independent Honorable Mention. A team captain, Wells averaged 10.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. A lock down defender, as well as a scoring combo guard, Wells season high was 22 points against Pomona-Pitzer. 
Sophomore Jared Ponce (Ayala High School, Chino Hills,CA) earned NCAA All-Independent Honorable Mention. In his second season, Ponce led the Banana Slugs in scoring at 12.3 points per game. Over a 10 game stretch through January and February, Jared averaged 18.3 points per game including a 29 point season high against Pomona-Pitzer.
