The Slugs end Whittier’s winning streak, with third win of the season

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The UCSC Men's Basketball team ended their losing streak today; as they went on to defeat the Whittier Poets, 74-66, at Kaiser Permanente Arena. This is the Slugs first win since, November 22, 2013 when they defeated the Linfield Wildcats.

The Slugs where lead by James Townsend, who scored 25 points, and grabbed 8 rebounds. Behind James, in scoring, was senior guard, Spencer Wells, who had an impressive 17 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and was 80% at the free throw line.

The Slugs held Whittier to a season low 40% from the field, which includes holding the Poets to a 35% three-point percentage, and 57% in free throws. UCSC lead during half time, 35-23, the lowest points scored by Whittier of the season, and had the Poets turnover the ball 17 times, while out rebounded them 44-35.

The Poets were able to outscore the Slugs 43-39 in the second half, but with Poets center Tyree Landrum being benched for foul trouble, the Slugs lead by eight points in the closing minutes of the game.

Next week, The Slugs play, Cal Maritime Keelhaulers, back in Kaiser Permanente Area. The game is scheduled to play on Saturday, January 11, at 5:00 PM PST.
