James Townsend Earns All Tournament Honors

REDLANDS, CA -- The UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs traveled to Redlands, CA this past weekend to take part in the Lee Fullmer Tournament hosted by the University of Redlands. 

The Slugs opened against the University of Redlands Friday night at Currier Gymnasium. After storming out the gates to a 38-29 advantage, Santa Cruz couldn't hold onto the lead in the second half as the hot shooting Bulldogs pulled ahead for a 62-51 victory. 

Santa Cruz Head Coach Ron DuBois was proud of the effort, despite the loss, noting that the high scoring Bulldogs were held 28 points below their season scoring average. 

The following night, UC Santa Cruz played NAIA Division I Arizona Christian. 

Arizona Christian University (4-1), led 48-32 at halftime and by as many as 26 points midway through the second half on its way to a 92-69 victory.

UC Santa Cruz Captain James Townsend received all-tournament honors for his impressive play over the weekend. 

Townsend, (Sacramento, CA / Sacramento HS) posted 28 points and 11 rebounds between the two games, including an 18 point 5 rebound night against University of Redlands. The 6'4 Sophomore Power-Forward displayed an impressive inside outside offensive game, scoring in the paint and also hitting 3 of his 6 three point attempts. One of three captains, Townsend has helped lead the Banana Slugs this season, averaging 11 points and 5 rebounds a game.
