Slug Athletics is excited to annouce that our Interim Faculty Athletic Rep J. Xavier Prochaska won the 2016-17 Outstanding Faculty Award in a small ceremony by the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences. This annual award is the Division’s highest honor for faculty achievement, recognizing combined excellence in research, teaching, and service.
Xavier is a Professor in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics and an Astronomer in the University of California Observatories, where he has been on the faculty since 2002. Xavier has been an outstanding scholar focused on observational astronomy with more than 360 contributions, a leader in the UC Observatories, an innovative and dedicated instructor of undergraduate and graduate students, and a contributor to the life of the campus through his Academic Senate service.
Xavier has served as Interim Faculty Athletic Rep for UCSC Athletics since spring 2017. As FAR, he is in charge of providing oversight of the academic integrity of the athletics program and serving as an advocate for student-athlete well-being.
Xavier also chaired the Special Committee for athletics in 2016/2017. This group was tasked with helping generate viable solutions for the future success of our Athletics Department. The passion and dedication of this Special Committee for Athletics proved to be instrumental in our referendum success in May 2017.
"Known by us all as "Professor X" or even just "X", he has been instrumental in uniting our campus in support of athletics. But mostly, our team knows him as the speedy guy with the great backhand and awesome net attack in doubles!" says Amy Jensen, Head Coach for Women's Tennis. "He has worked behind the scenes so that athletics can thrive at UCSC, but now we get the chance to honor him publicly!"
"Xavier's work as the chair on the Special Committee for Athletics was a huge reason UCSC Athletics will continue on a sustainable path going forward," added head men's basketball coach Ron Dubois. "Our campus community, alumni, current students and the many future Slugs to come will be forever grateful for all he has done for UCSC Athletics!"
