University of California, Santa Cruz outside hitter Salvatore La Cavera III has been selected as the first ever Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Player of the Year. La Cavera (Huntington Beach, Calif.), 6-1 junior outside hitter, was recently named to the CVC West All-Division team, averaging 4.18 kills per set and a .321 hitting percentage in West Division matches.

In a what could be a preview of the 2013 Division III Megabowl championships, UC Santa Cruz came up short against the Whitman MIssionaries, losing 3-5. Whitman got the first point with Webster/Palkowitz getting an 8-2win at #3 doubles over Truong/Parker. UCSC evened the match at 1-1 with Scotten/Wade defeating Roberg/Lawless 8-5 in a battle of top ranked doubles teams. Lymburner/Malone fought hard and played a great match, defeating Lawless/Ralston in a thrilling 9-7 victory to put the slugs up 2-1 going into singles.

The lady slugs were on their second day in the beautiful town of San Luis Obispo, hoping to be more successful than they were the previous day. On January 28, 2012, the Lady Slugs took on the Lady Dons from the University of San Francisco. In the doubles competition, USF's Nikolic and Hashiguchi pulled off a tough victory over Alex Scotten and Laura Wade and the match was neck-and-neck the entire time.

Chapman Drops 90 Points in Win
After Chapman University and UC Santa Cruz split their first two games this season, Chapman erupted to score a 90-58 victory over the Slugs, shooting almost 52% from the field and a very impressive 58.3% from behind the arc. On Youth Basketball Night at the Hutton Center on the Chapman University campus, the gym rocked with over 2000 fans including 300 youth basketball players. In attendance at the game was John Saintignon, the Slugs all time leading scorer.

Speedy Slugs Outrun Bobcats at Merced
Outside Hosteltler Court at UC Merced, there was a mild drizzle. Inside, Sam Allen was raining threes as he hit five to lead the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs to a comfortable 76-71 victory over the UC Merced Bobcats. With the victory, the Slugs ran their record to 10-9. In doing so, Santa Cruz is about .500 for the season in January for the first time since January of 1998, the last time the Slugs finished about .500 for a season, 13-12. In Friday night's narrow victory over Chapman, the Slugs won playing a slow, deliberate style. On Sunday afternoon, the men from Cruz showed why most teams choose not to run with them.

Slugs Beat the Kingsmen
For the second time this season, UC Santa Cruz was able to defeat Cal Lutheran by 10 points, this time winning 61-51 before the home crowd at the Slug Dome. Down 2-0 before the game even started due to a technical foul for a dunk during warm ups, the Slugs Jamien Jones tied the game up 29 seconds into the game on two free throws of his own. The early action in the game would account for five ties in the first seven minutes with both teams taking a slight lead.

For the second night in a row, the Slugs shot 50% from the field and held their opponents to less than 35% as Santa Cruz defeated Cal Lutheran 60-50 to run their record to 5-6 for the season. In doing so, the Slugs went undefeated to capture the SCIAC Classic for the second time in three years. Cal Lutheran took their only lead just 32 seconds into the game on a tip in by Aaron Van Klaveren.

Slugs Get Fourth in the Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament
During the third-place game, Chapman University and UC Santa Cruz battled it out in an evenly matched contest. Neither team found its rhythm for quite some time until the Panthers broke a 19-all tie at the two-minute mark on a sophomore forward Nick Dragovich (La Crescenta, CA) lay-up. Chapman mustered a halftime lead of three points, which eventually stood up for the 74-65 win.

In a game plagued with errors by both teams, the William Jessup Warriors produced one sustained run late in the 2nd half and slipped past UC Santa Cruz 56-46 in Rocklin. The Slugs are off to the first rounds of NCAA team play this upcoming weekend. We get in the vans this afternoon as we head down to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges for the tournament we have all been waiting for. It has been an amazing year thus far, and we intend to go the rest of the way, guns blazing, till the last ball is struck. From here on out the NCAA’s is a single elimination tournament, last team standing taking home a National Title with a ring to match.

Slugs vs Kingsmen: A Demonstration to Remember
On April 22nd the UCSC Men’s tennis team took on #6 Nationally ranked Cal Lutheran Kingsmen. After a season of huge wins and tough losses the Slugs knew that this, our last home match this late in the season, was as important as it gets. The west region is packed with tough teams this year, and as we get closer to NCAA play come May, matches like this hold a huge amount of weight.

Back to the Cruz after a Spring break down south
The Slugs returned to Santa Cruz this past Saturday with a long week of tennis under their belts. Our trip started in San Diego where we were fortunate enough to stay with some of our players amazing families, and ended with five days of tennis in the LA area before returning home. It was a week full of fun, family, wins, loses, heartbreak, cheers, lessons, and all that comes with eight days on the road together.

The match we had all been waiting for, Slugs vs Stags…
The Slugs went 1-1 this weekend with a 5-4 loss to #6 Nationally ranked Kenyon College and a 6-3 victory over #4 Nationally ranked regional rival Claremont-Mud-Scripps. With a tough Friday afternoon loss to Kenyon, a mixed bag of emotions was apparent among the team as we prepared for our biggest match of the season that very next day.

Recap in Fresno. On to the weekend we've all been waiting for...
The Slugs came back from back-to-back matches in Fresno this past weekend with a solid showing. Coming of a stellar performance at the National Indoor Championships the week before, the Slugs were able to go 1-1 in Fresno, beating Division II Sonoma State and falling to the NAIA defending National Champions Fresno Pacific University.

Slugs Reach Finals of ITA National Indoor Championships. Road to becoming a Championship Team
This past weekend in St. Peter, Minnesota the Slugs walked away with a 2nd place trophy and a monstrous step towards becoming the championship team we daily discuss. After defeating two top 10 nationally ranked teams in the first two rounds, Trinity of Texas and Washington University of St. Louis, the Slugs went down to the Emory Eagles of Atlanta Georgia.

UCSC Men's Soccer Announces Summer Advanced Player Development Camp
UC Santa Cruz Men’s Soccer’s annual APD Camp will be from July 31st – August 3rd , 2012 on the beautiful campus of UCSC. The APD Camp is a four-day intensive camp designed for the elite-level player who is motivated to play at the college level. Players will train using the same methods and facilities as the highly successful UC Santa Cruz Men’s Soccer Program, as well as get a chance to interact with many members of the team.

Alexandra Scotten Falls in First Round of NCAA Championships
Alex Scotten lost a well fought match in the first round of the NCAA Championships to Kelly Gebert of Depauw University 6-3, 6-4. Scotten went down 0-2 in the first set but came back to tie it up at 2-2 after some great shotmaking and unforced errors from her opponent.

Slugs Fall to Concordia-Moorehead
An overtime defensive miscue by UC Santa Cruz provided a premium scoring opportunity for Concordia-Moorhead. In the 98th minute Sarah Rounds stole possession from the Banana Slugs central defender and raced towards goal for a one-on-one with the keeper.

Slugs Upset Regals in NCAA West Region First Round
In the 95th minute, Michele Stathatos scored the golden goal off of an assist from Chay Thomas, and the UCSC Women’s Soccer Team continues their incredible season. UCSC defeated the NCAA West Regional host and #10 ranked team in the nation California Lutheran University. The Slugs advance to play Concordia- Moorehead in the 2nd round Sunday night at 5pm at Rolland Stadium at California Lutheran University.

Women's Soccer Makes NCAA Regionals
November 7, 2011 was a day of anticipation and excitement for the UCSC Women’s Soccer Team and in the Athletic Office in general as they found out that their squad is advancing to the NCAA playoffs since their hiatus last season. After what was a disappointing season in 2010, going 1-13-2 after a history of making it to the playoffs every year since 2006, this year it was time to dust off the shock and embrace the goal that the 2011 squad achieved.

The UC Santa Cruz Women’s Soccer squad opened the fall 2011 season on the road in Clinton near Jackson the capital of Mississippi under humid and stormy skies. Tropical Storm Lee threatened to open up as well. The weather did little to slow down the Slugs as they proved they could put the tough season of 2010 behind them.

The UCSC women continued tradition with their opening season race at the University of San Francisco Invitational while the men’s team competed as an NCAA DIII team for the first time.
