David Klech has agreed to join the UC Santa Cruz Track & Field and Cross Country coaching staff as an Assistant Coach.
A native of San Ramon, coach Klech was the Gatorade State Track and Field High School Athlete of the Year in 2005 and 2006 and was National Athlete of the Year in 2006. As a Junior he won a Bronze at the Worth Youth Championships in the 400m hurdles. He has spent the last three years coaching at Acalanes High School in Contra Costa County.
"I'm thrilled to be adding David Klech to our staff. His coaching experience and success at both the high school and college level has perfectly prepared him to help lead the continued expansion of our program," said director of track Jamey Harris. "Banana Slug Track & Field is in good hands."
His competitive experience at UCLA and Oregon gave him great insight into the impact that coaching philosophy can have on a program and the student-athletes within it. After a season at UCLA, he transferred to Oregon and was a two-time All-American in the Decathlon before graduating in 2011 with a degree in Psychology. After graduation he spent 3 years as an assistant for the Ducks. His experience as a decathlete and certification as a multi-events coach have given him a broad scope of technical knowledge to impact athletes in all event groups.
"He really connects with the student-athletes. He has the athlete-centered approach we embrace here at UC Santa Cruz," said Harris. "His ability to work cooperatively with our critical volunteer assistant coaches will be vital to our success."
