Welcome to our Athletic Department, where we are in a constant and daily search for the next great UC Santa Cruz Student-Athlete. At the NCAA DIII level, we consider ourselves to be the premier opportunity for student-athletes on the West Coast. We believe our academics, part of the prestigious University of California system, our location, in a radiant beach town overlooking the Pacific Ocean and adjacent to the Silicon Valley, as well as our accomplished and decorated coaching and support staff, are second to none.
Consider this page an introduction to who we are, as well as a guide for communicating with our athletic coaches.
Before we begin, please note the NOVEMBER 30TH DEADLINE FOR THE UC APPLICATION FILING PERIOD
As much as our coaches want you to be our next great Banana Slug, you must submit your application before the November 30th deadline. Please refer to admissions for additional information regarding applications deadlines.
Additionally, please review the qualifications required for acceptance to school. As a University of California, our admissions process is extremely competitive. You can find all the information you will need at our admissions home page.
Finally, as an NCAA Division III athletic program, we do not offer athletic scholarships. The majority of our student-athletes earn tuition through other mediums. To find information about academic scholarships, grants and student aid, please visit our financial aid home page.
Now, LETS TALK ABOUT WHAT MAKES US SO UNIQUE!!
The first thing that may stand out to you is our memorable mascot, Sammy the Banana Slug. Some may think this is an odd representative of an athletic program, but to those of us on campus it describes the "unique" qualities of our University. Slug Life! From an academic and athletic perspective, UC Santa Cruz offers an experience that cannot be duplicated by NCAA Division III schools.
With a campus that sits on 2,000 acres of land overlooking the Pacific Ocean and an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 16,000 students, broken down into 10 smaller colleges within the "University Umbrella," we have the largest student body as well as the biggest campus of any Division III program nation-wide.
What does this mean for you?
First, from an academic perspective, this means a diverse selection of academic opportunities. With 63 different undergraduate degrees, there is an academic program for every interest. More so, from a social perspective, you receive the best of both worlds, a large and diverse student body as well as small class sizes and close relationships with professors and faculty.
Secondly, UC Santa Cruz is the only "University of California" to offer an NCAA DIII athletic program. While you may not have the opportunity to participate for a Division I powerhouse, as offered by the majority of our friends in the UC system, you can still compete within your sport at the collegiate level while earning a "University of California" education at UC Santa Cruz.
Yet another thing that sets UC Santa Cruz apart, is its proximity to the Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. At roughly a 30 minute drive from campus, the Silicon Valley plays host to some of the largest corporations in the world Facebook, Ebay and Google. This tech-centric area offers the highest amount of tech jobs per capita in the world, with an average salary of $138,000.
San Francisco, roughly an hour drive from campus, offers the numerous exciting opportunities made available by a big city, including professional sports teams, internship and job opportunities and tourist locations.
To showcase to us your talents, LET US HELP YOU COMMUNICATE WITH OUR ATHLETIC COACHES
With 23 individual National Championships, 9 team National Championships and 285 Division III All-Americans, UC Santa Cruz student-athletes have enjoyed an inordinate amount of success. Pushing them each and every step of the way is our accomplished, respected and professional coaching staff. The defining and unifying moment in each of these unique success, was the initial contact between a coach and prospective student-athlete. As the lifeline for our continued success, we want to help you get connected with your future coaches and mentors as quickly and crisply as possible.
The most effective way to reach out to a coach is by sending a short and simple email to the head coach of your desired sport. Please include your academic accomplishments, GPA and test scores, your athletic accomplishments, relevant stats and awards or highlight films, as well as your High School and where you are from. Please understand that our coaches are extremely busy, particularly while in-season. The shorter and simpler the email, the better. Allow 72 hours for a reply if the coach is currently in-season and 24 hours if they are out of season. If you do not receive a response within 72 hours, it is recommended that you reach out to an assistant coach.

While email is a great way to express your interest to our coaches, there is NO BETTER WAY TO GET RECRUITED than attending our athletic camps. While each coach offers differing and unique camp opportunities, they will all allow you to showcase your skills, build rapport with your future coaching staffs and get a feel for our campus communities.
To find out which sports offer which camps, please visit their respective team pages and look for the link "CAMPS."
The final question becomes, DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?
Now that you have gotten to know us, we are thrilled and excited to get to know you!!! We cant wait for you to join what we consider to be the TOP Division III athletic experience on the West Coast. So, Do you have the drive, determination and strength of will to succeed at UC Santa Cruz?
Do you have what it takes to be a Banana Slug!!!
